They breathe a thoughtful poetry, the paintings of Edwin Smet (1972). Their colours are delicate, but also extremely explosive at times. Painted with acrylic paint, which sometimes takes over with refined force, escaping from the restraint of the painter’s hand. We see trees. Never alone, always in the company of others. And there is often also an impression of a marshy mire in the paintings. But are they really landscapes? To what extent do these works have a story to tell? Why do we never see people? Did they all have to rush away in a hurry? Parijs. Je zwerft wat rond. De dagen repeteren zich weekjes. Dan, plots, de intense ervaring – en je tijd duurt weer. Overal liggen hoofden, plassen weerkaatsen de stad, wat gewoontjes is glorieert. Doodgaan doe je éénmaal, maar iedereen kan het, zo ook Marcel Proust (1871-1922). Leven is minder eenvoudig. Proust deed er het zijne mee, kweekte al corrigerend een complex bouwwerk voor hij stierf, je zag iets dat je eerder niet zag. Smet deed er een eeuw later het zijne mee.
